It all started in China

Coffee was introduced to the Yunnan province in the late 19th century by a French missionary, but it wasn’t until as recently as 1988 when the Chinese government, the World Bank, and the United Nations Development Programme jointly initiated a program to kickstart coffee as a crop in the region. In 2013, Yunnan Coffee Traders became the regions first dedicated specialty coffee exporter. Most of the coffee grown in Yunnan is Catimor, a Caturra/Timor hybrid.

Banka farm and washing station is based in Menglian Dai, Lahu and Va Autonomous County in Yunnan and is named after the two adjacent villages, Banka Yi and Banka Er. Banka mill is managed by Yunnan Coffee Traders.

Why did we pick this coffee?

One of our first coffees was sourced from China through Indochina Ltd and it left such an impression on ourselves and our customers that we wanted to further explore what this region has to offer. This, along with the Natural version of the same coffee, for us was just such a great opportunity to showcase what a difference processing can make on a coffee. As a counterpoint to the rich, fruitiness of the natural, this coffee had some wonderful bright, floral qualities on the cupping table.

Prices and units shown are presented without conversion in the currency and units presented to us, this generally indicates the currency and units the coffee was traded in.

FOB price is the price paid immediately prior to shipping, so tends to include local taxes, transportation, processing, etc

Farmgate price isn't always an accurate indicator of how much a farmer earns for their coffee, as different systems are used throughout the world to determine how much to pay the farmer. For example, in some origins the farmer is paid for the cherry, prior to processing; while other origins the farmer will be paid based on parchment.

Commodity price is based off the commodity price of coffee on the date of purchase.

A note from our Head Roaster, Lukasz

The washed version of Banka I found particularly interesting when tasted side by side with its natural counterpart. It’s always a fantastic opportunity to try the same coffee processed by two different methods, to get that firsthand experience of how it affects the end product. But the strength of this coffee doesn’t lie in curiosity alone, it’s a fantastic example of a delicate, floral coffee that could hold its own against African beans famous for these qualities.
